I have been a “user” of Mary Kay for many, many years. Many.

So, when an opportunity to review my beloved Mary Kay arose, I was all, “REVIEW? MARY KAY? GIMME. LOVE.”

Surprisingly, as familiar as I am with Mary Kay… I got a little surprise. Receiving the new goods helped me realize I had fallen into a bit of a rut. I had my found awesome… my colors, my “system”… But then I got my box, and was introduced to a pinker shade of lip color than my “norm”… a more neutral color pallet for my eyes… and my ever-favorite Ultimate Mascara.

Wanna see what that Mary Kay did to me???

I’m sorry. I may have gone a little bit overboard. But I couldn’t help it!

And the reactions of my 12 year old son and 9 year old daughter… were PRICELESS! Upon first sight of their mother… both said, “WOW!” My daughter added, “You look REALLY pretty mom!”

And we know that kids are the Honest of the Honest, so. It was official – me = pretty!

Let me tell you what it is I love about Mary Kay:

• Their mineral eye shadow stays on and gives great coverage.

• Their compacts are magnetic, lovely and the product stays in!

• My blush and eye colors are in one place.

• The Ultimate Mascara doesn’t give me that “black-eye” shadow… it wears and wears and wears…

• And this!

I love me some good make-up, but I have always had a hard time knowing HOW to create a “look”. I received the Brilliant Blue Eyes mineral eye color bundle, and it showed me HOW to use the 3 neutral colors to help bring out my the blue in my eyes.

It worked, no?

There a couple of things going on here…

1. A brand-spanking new haircut from Inga at Seaport Salon and Spa (An Aveda concept salon) located in Silverdale WA, yo, and…
2. Some very healthy feeling hair that I have been giving some TLC as I have been personally testing out the Aveda Damage Remedy line, AND the Sun Care line AND also my skin has been testing out the Replenishing moisturizer (my little Lucy LOVES the stuff – gotta keep my eye on her!)… and hair is held by the Control Force hairspray… and…

My hair is so blasted soft right now. And feeling strong. And smells of pure delight.

I know – we BOTH wish I had a scratch and sniff blog!

My experience at the Seaport Salon and Day Spa was delightful.

Everyone was warm and ready to roll… the “spa water”… which was cucumber water was so refreshing. I had a few sips before my master stylist, Inga, took me to her station…

She offered me two aromatherapy oils to choose from. I chose the “energizing” aromatherapy scent. Inga had me take 3 deep “energizing” breaths and the head massage ensued.

Heaven much?

YES.

Inga was great about asking questions about my hair… I could tell she wanted to get  a clear idea of what I had in mind before she whipped out her scissors.

I appreciated that.

I had my hair cut fairly short a couple of years back, and I am still trying to get somewhere with length. I really didn’t give her much to work with, but she made sense of my jibberish and cut just enough to give me the shape I’d hoped for and make my tattered ends all neat and shiny.

Walking into a new place is hard… who you gonna let come at you with scissors *wink*. But having confidence that there are trained professionals backed-up by a company with strong commitment to high-quality… I felt confident about my decision to step-out into new territory.

In the past number of weeks I have been spending quite a bit of time getting to know Aveda. Getting to know their business practices, much of their product line, and have been to two of their spaces. The benefit Aveda salons offer is not only product consistency, but service consistency. Though I got a haircut at one salon, and some pampering at another, it was clear they strive to maintain a consistent excellent level of service to their guests.

And here’s the thing, friends. My hair is important to me. I have gone through great experiences and some pretty awful ones. New stylists make ne NERVOUS.

My issues are not just about my “image” or monetary value (though important)… it’s also about time and quality. I appreciate Aveda product for their effort in all things green,

and for their efforts in world-wide social responsibility… all the way down to providing my with a quality haircut. My time is valuable. I don’t have time to go get it fixed. I want to go to a place I am confident will do things well and do them right.

Hitherhencetofore… Aveda.

Demands on my time are increasing, and my own physical activity is the thing that usually gets cut first. I notice that this adjustment has made me feel less happy and less physically strong. And friends… I really like feeling strong. It makes me feel capable and confident.

As a result of cutting back my physical activity I have realized I really, really need to make an active lifestyle a priority on my to-do list. But it means I have to be creative with how I stay active. I don’t have the time to do what I used to, but I NEED to keep moving… I just checked out Degree with motionSENSE “Get Into the Move Challenge” and am encouraged!

It’s their application on Facebook. Degree with motionSENSE is an antiperspirant/deoderant that starts working with one’s motion, instead of waiting to activate when you start to sweat, due their motionSENSE technology!

I’m sorry.

I don’t mean to be so full of myself.

Actually, this post has less to do with me, and more to do with Gene Juarez.

Well.

Aaaanywho.

Who, or rather, WHAT is this Gene Juarez, you ask?

Gene Juarez is a Seattle-area chain of high-end salons and spas. Gene Juarez is known for it’s quality services and beautiful facilities…. known for pampering and staffing high-quality stylists/designers.

And designers they are. Colorists focus on color, hair designers focus on the cuts. Services vary depending on location… from hair to massage to facials to make-up and nails and waxing.

I had the privilege of experiencing their newest location at the Kitsap Mall in Silverdale, Washington.

It was a morning I had been waiting for. A much needed and welcomed post-holiday-madness morning of refreshingnessessess starting with a brow re-haul wax. I probably lost a good 5 pounds of eyebrow hair. I was OVERDUE, y’all.

Then came the Revitalizing Facial… which was, like, AN HOUR… that included a collagen caviar masque. Yeah… I. Know!

I actually fell asleep. I didn’t even know I was falling asleep until I woke up when Ellie laid the masque on my face. Whoops! And AAAHHHHH! It was about an hour of … well… I’m not sure. On account of the fact I fell asleep! If that isn’t big props for a job well done… *bows to Ellie*

Then we were onto le hair… My designer was Karly, and a designer she was. I have long hair and have been wanting a bit more shape, without having to “go short”. I need to give props to Karly. I think she did a FABULOUS job…

And then they trotted me off for a bit of make-up. Shelby applied my make-up and explained the process of my eventual beautification all the way. I now feel equipped to do a bit of eye shadow shading… was taught some eye-liner tips, and she even added some temporary lashes on the outer edges of my upper lashes. OH MAN. I am HOOKED.

I am thrilled to have a new salon with a long-standing and quality reputation located so close to my home. I was impressed with the level of service, the attention to detail and appreciated the contemporary feel of the salon. I felt pampered and well-tended to. That is not something I find at home…

And I couldn’t stop taking pictures of myself. For posterity’s sake. *ahem*…

Dear Gene Juarez, You *may* have created a monster. A well-trimmed, clean-faced, trendy-styled, thick-lashed and eye-shadowed monster!

How important is a smile?

Well… in my experience a smile can turn a day around.

Think about those days you are feeling down. Think about the times you walk past strangers during those down times. Do you receive a somber glance, and emotionless pass of the eyes, do they look at the ground… or do you receive a smile?

Which one lifts? Which one makes a positive difference in your day?

My feeling is — a smile is like a really good cup of coffee. It’s not a big deal, we do it every day. It’s not hard… but can make a HUGE difference.

Whoa! That might be a little extreme. And perhaps a touch scary.

How about this:

I have always been a smiler. Even when my teeth were wonky. But as I look back, I know my smile was hindered. In all honesty, getting my chompers straightened-out has been a huge boost in smile-confidence. I wanted have my teeth straightened when I was young, but it never worked out. And my teeth only got worse. One of the best things I have done for myself, was to give my teeth and mind the gift of being straight. I used to think twice about whether to cast a smile… now I just let those smiles fly!

Unless I think I have lettuce in my teeth, but I digress…

We laugh a lot in our family. We giggle, we joke, and our heart of silliness and joy isn’t left in the home. My kids are learning how their smiles, their laughter and their positive perspective on life affects the world around us. The reasons we smile may feel good for us… but when we share with others, it is a blessing. A day changer.

We can’t always give the money or the time we want… or that is needed, but we can always lend a happy heart… which is most often expressed by a generous smile.

A smile. What a great way to make a difference.

Do it for the children

See? I can’t even not put a smiley face emoticon. It’s like an illness… a really, really happy illness.

Also, I don’t know why my lips are so pink in that video. I think my lips were really chapped. It’s a long story, that involves losing power and crashing at the home of some good friends… which is why my friend Stacy makes an appearance with me at the end. Ah, Stacey… she makes me smile. Aaaanywho…

I first “met” Lisa Leonard on Twitter… many moons ago.

The moment I saw her designs I knew she was lovely… To create such lovely, meaningful jewelry… I just knew she was a lovely woman.

I KNEW…

And I was right.

…she’s pretty too {and I stole this pic from her blog}.

Last June I went to the Evo Conference and got to meet, like in real life, MEET Lisa!!! And bless her heart, she braved sharing a suite with me along with about 7 other women. They were all very brave. And Awesome.

And I never heard Lisa snore. And if I did, I’d never tell…

I digress.

Before meeting her, I imagined Lisa to be kind, gentle and… just lovely. And that really is the best word for her – lovely. Warm + engaging + deep + kind + quick to laugh = lovely.

A friend of mine posted a link on my Facebook wall awhile ago.

Reminds me of a song… “Matchmaker, matchmaker, make me a match… find me a find…catch me a catch!” Oh, a match was made!

A first glance, I thought… “OH Those are pretty.”

I am not a fru-fru kinda- gal. I am not a fan of lace or dainty stuffs. However, I DO like flowers and whimsy and pink. But in particular ways. Then I have some rocker-chick in me too… I like tattoo art. I like clean lines. I like colors that pop.

Eclectic? Yes, let’s call my tastes “eclectic”.

AND I like a good sense of humor. I value wit and get a kick out of new twists on old themes.

Which brings me to my point, the greeting card. A card + a greeting = greeting card. Easiest math I’ll ever do. There are many cards to choose from, for all imaginable or unimaginable occasions.

But how many greeting card lines successfully bridge the gap between style, wit AND charm? How many draw in your eye… Building an expectation of one thing, and get an entirely other “thing”.

Beauty.

How complicated is that? Is it found inside? Is it about symmetry? Is it only in the eye of the beholder?

Golly. I hope beauty doesn’t soley rely on our physical appearance. I think I have more bad days than good when it comes to outer beauty… or not. It depends on the place, and who’s lookin’ at me.

I would have to say the place I feel most beautiful is when I am sharing life with the people I love… who love me…

My compassion. My wit. My girlish charm. My love and misguided passion… My quirky, sexy, beauty-filled heart.

The Suprémacie Jour moisturizer and the Suprémacie Yeux eye cream are heavy enough for overnight use, and not too heavy for day wear. I have also also been using the facial treatment cream, but I am not noticing much change with that.

Something I am pretty picky about is scent. I have been delighted with the scent of each product, even the champagne scented body lotion. I was pleasantly surprised. Additionally, the facial products I have been using have a pretty scent, but is VERY light. I’d call it powdery, not at all perfumy. I am not a fan of flowery scents, so was a bit nervous, but I found L’Bel to be fresh and light!
