This is a compensated review from BlogHer and Febreze NOTICEables
*Update! And the winner is — Betty N.! Congratulations Betty!*
Right before I found out about this review opportunity, I had the following discussion with my son:
Son: Mom? Does our house have a smell?
Me: Errrmmmm, yeah. But…. lemme light a candle…. What?
*This is not me. Really.*
Son: Well, Josh’s house has a smell, Sam’s house has a smell… does OUR house have a smell?
Me: Ya know, it DOES, but I know what you mean. I don’t know that our house REALLY has “A smell”.
You see, my son has a very sensitive olfactory system.

He is always commenting on my perfume or lotion. He LOVES when I wear pretty smelling stuff, and it is rare he does not comment when I pop open the lotion in the car. I know when I am 80 and reminiscing about his childhood, in my quivering voice I will say, “Ooooh honey… remember how you used to tell me I smell good… Comehere and give your mama a hug…Sonnyboy… do I still smell good, do I still smell pretty?” He will be 56, and I will smell of old age, and pretty lotion. I will also be sporting gray pigtails, cuz that’s how I roll.
I am not exaggerating about my boy. There have been times kids have left clothes at our house and I will ask, “Who does this belong to?” And Joel will say, “Here! Let me smell it.”
Not. Kidding. No wonder the boy has wanted a dog so bad. He may be part canine.
I tell you ALL OF THAT to say, the sense of smell and what our smellers sniff is important in this here home.

So. Imagine the day we got our box of Febreze NOTICEables. We might as well have had “Jingle Bells” playing and pine needles scattered about the floor, for all the Christmas-like excitement. Listen in:
- Ooooh – what kind is that mom?
- *sniiiiiiiffff* Yum… Oh can I have that in MY room?
- Hey! Oh! I REALLY like that one mom.
- *scuttlescuttleplug* I get this one!*sniiiiifffff*
I felt like I was at BBQ picnic in a dog park for all the wildly sniffin’ my kids were doing.
Finally, I was all, “AWAY!” This is for ME! I am the mom! I am the blogger! ME! ME! ME!
We received 3 plug in units and 4 refills. We have one unit in our living/dining/kitchen area (BIG open space) and one plugged into an upstairs outlet. So, if my math is correct *shudder… math*… we have 7 scents from these people. And since these are the dual scented oils – it’s more like 14!
We were received: auntumn spice/harvest festivities, morning walk/cleansing rain, warm celebration/pumpkin harvest, pure refreshment/summer storm, clothesline breeze/meadow songs, lavender comfort/gentle vanilla, AND hibiscus/rainforest.
My evaluation in pro/con format:
Pros:
- I have a pretty big house. One plug-in is enough for my 2 main floors.
- We all really like most of the scents, though our family isn’t wild about the fru-fruier, flowerish smells. Our fave is the morning walk/cleansing rain and clothesline/breeze/meadow songs. I stash dryer sheets about the house because I SO love the clean laundry smell. Ya know, to offset the smell that the laundry is actually NOT clean, I suppose *hangs head*
- There is a high and low setting option! While we like a nice smelling residence, we like it to be subtle, not “in your face”.
- Easy to use.
Cons:
- The main “con” is I wish there was one lower setting. I found that I’d plug in one for a day or two, then take it out for several hours. It goes back to our “subtle” preference.
- We won’t be using the flowery-ish smelling ones. That’s just our noses’ personal preference
But to be completely honest, I agreed to do this review because I have been looking at plug-ins lately… because my son wants a “smell”. A week before the opportunity for this came up, I perused the grocery aisle for an option, and found my 4 year old nagging at me… so I was too stressed to make a decision which brand and which scent. So I left.
But I need to search no more. I just wish the interwebz was “scratch-n-sniff cmpatible. Go ahead, check – this is the morning walk/cleansing rain scent:

Did you try? See. The interwebz is not yet “scratch-n-sniff” compatible. Somebody is working on it, I’m sure. HOWEVER, Febreeze has made their box scratch and sniff, so when you find yourself at the store, browsing though your options… just pick up a box and scratch-n-sniff away!

Keep up on the ridiculous, the insightful, the always digressive…

What do I do to make the house smell un-smelly? I do burn candles that are scented. I really go for the woodsy, earth tones, but do have some lighter fragrances. I have a sensitive nose as well and if the scent is wrong it usually results in headaches all around. So we are careful with what we use.
My other unsmelling tip is this: once a month I sprinkle baking soda all over my carpets. Let it sit for 15 min or so, then vacuum it up. The soda absorbs odors and leaves a ‘clean’ scent. We have a dog, cat, two kids and one husband that all contribute to odor. ME? No, I only have pleasant odors…*not true*
I am very finicky about smells and do not want to simply “mask” smells in the house. I generally use mild scented soaps and open windows if the house need airing out. When I want to really get rid of a smell, I simply clean, clean clean.
What do I do? I circulate Fresh air throughout my apartment. I have a window fan in my kitchen window, set to “exhaust” and I leave one of the other windows in my house partially open…(the degree of openness depends on the weather and temperature outside). This ensures a constant supply of fresh air and eliminates odors and stale air. Of course I also use Febreeze..:)
There are many things I should do to maintain a clean & fresh home, but I usually just barely manage to scrape by with a not-too-gross-looking, ok-smelling home by 1) emptying the kitchen trash before it overflows; 2) throwing out items from the fridge once they become unrecognizable; and 3) encouraging my 2 year old son to pee “IN THE POTTY! KEEP IT IN THE POTTY!” Is that enough to win the contest
I think that vacuuming often really helps especially if you have indoor dogs. I also use Fabreeze spray on our couches and rugs.
Scratch n sniff is AWESOME! How many times have I brung home a new smellerizer, only to find I hate the smell. That’s not really a question.
I, too, dislike the flowery scents. If it’s got the terms “fresh, “rain,” “laundry,” “linen,” or “clean,” I’ll probably like it.
TO MAINTAIN A CLEAN, FRESH HOME:
Cinnamon-scented pinecones, people! Unfortunately, they’re not available year-round, but whenever I can get ‘em, I sprinkle them around the house liberally. My husband claims the smell is “too harsh,” but he doesn’t get a vote.
I just Tweeted about it. How do I link to that? Um. Quick! Go on Twitter! Well, shucks. I linked to you. Hopefully you’ll find it.
I always keep our trash cans empty! Helps mostly with diapers!!
I have a regular cleaning time every day while the kids pick up, I do the wiping down and deep cleaning.
I make sure to keep the kitchen clean and the garbage taken out regularly.
Hello. I mean. Of ALL your friends with noses, you know that mine is superior. I am all about the smell and have been for a long time. #scentwhore
How do I keep a fresh smell in my house? I moved my family out to the guest cottage. Totally works. Highly recommend it. Seriously, I love plug ins. I have one in my entry, one in my bathroom, one in the laundry room, and one in the kitchen. Oh.. and one in the guest cottage, for the rest of my family.
But, my nose: http://blozulfog.wordpress.com/2009/01/14/let-me-tell-you-about-my-nose/
ooh, i love visa gift cards and i love febreeze! I agree with you, the flowery ones, just too much, but i love most scents that include the words rain, meadow or fresh! Thanks for the giveaway!
haha@the pics!! too funny-I am NOT a fan either of the flowery smelling stuff lol-I prefer “crisp linen” or something fruity:)
I am obsessed with making my home smell good! I am constantly burning scented candles and use febreze alot!!
I also do regular cleaning of course and use bleach to sanitize!
Thank you for the chance to win!

I have a special bottle of cleaning solution that I like to call “Moms Secret Sauce” which is really just water and ammonia. This mixture makes for a great cleaning solution and really makes the house smell fresh and clean. I love it and its cheap. Saves me a ton, dont have to buy windex or any other cleaners like 409 or anything.
I vacuum every. day. Seriously. Once a week I scrub the floors on my hands and knees, and as if that wasn’t enough, I do laundry every day. Whew! *Wipes brow*. Even with all of that, it just takes one head of cabbage or 1 piece of fish to smell it up. Those Febreeze plug ins would certainly be a wonderful aid in keeping my nose happy! And the $100? Well, I do need lots more cleaning supplies:)
I totally Blogged about it…

Well…Febreeze is MOST important in the morning
for my family. Just plain and simple, truth.
The most important thing we’ve found is that we have to periodically do a thorough wash (like with bleach) of the cat boxes. We regularly change the litter AND we use litter pan liners, but with 3 cats the smell can start to build up. Completely emptying the litter boxes and washing them out takes care of any little microbes and whathaveyou that sneak onto the box itself.
And, of course, I LOVE my febreeze noticeables and when we’re having company, those suckers get stuck on HIGH from about two hours before guests are due until after they leave.
I too am always worried about what my house smell is. I first started noticing house smells when I would go to a friends house that always smelled of curry. It took me years to understand why I didn’t smell anything at our house.
To keep our home fresh we air it out regularly, when weather permits, and we burn soy based candles or incense. No shameless plug, we honestly also use Febreeze mostly on our clothes to freshen them up.
Some people really DO have a smell. I love the pictures in this review and these sound awesome.
We normally don’t do too much. I have no idea what our smell is…however, we do try and use some kind of scent for the bathroom b/c that can get smelly obviously.

I try to use bleach each day on counter tops
I vaccum every other day
I do have two different febreeze plugged in
I have a febreeze bottle in the car
and I use the pet order spray one.
Ha, your photos rock! I think I need this, because when I went out of town and opened my suitcase, the smell was sort of wet doggish. That’s not appealing.
I use deodorizing spray on the diaper pail to help freshen the baby’s nursery.
I blogged:

We make sure to vacuum the high-traffic areas often and air the rooms out.
The most important thing I do to keep our home smelling fresh is take out the trash…and often.
Great review! I think the most important thing I do is to make sure that we bath the dog often. That really helps us because she’s an indoor/outdoor dog. We also vacuum every other day (mostly because of the dog) and I do light candles occasionaly. I would LOVE to try this out!
I don’t like the flowery smells either. We just try to vaccum, take out the trash and keep shoes out of the way! Sometimes I put lavender essential oil on light bulbs so the smell infuses the room.
We have a new rule with our big dog. When someone lets him outside they have to wipe down the walls with a disinfectant wipe (like lysol wipes) and sweep the floor in his room. It really has helped keep the smell and hair situations under control.
I make sure the dishes are done everyday and I like scented stuff!
We constantly need to keep up with our floor. Our puppy is shedding constantly these days, so there’s always a swiffer flying around!
To maintain a clean, fresh-smelling house, I try to clean a little every day, and not let things build up. I use disinfectant wipes to wipe down counters, sinks, etc. I use an automatic shower cleaner in the shower every day. I also use candles to add a nice smell.
I love it when my house smells fresh and clean – consequently I love Febreeze especially their allergen reducer as many in my family struggle with allergies. I can attest that it truly does work and I am a big fan!
I try to clean a little each day to keep the place from smelling. And never leave dishes in the sink!

To keep our home smelling fresh, we take the trash out right away and keep the dog off the furniture and on her own little beds with washable covers throughout the house.
I am trying to find enough things I do to fill out all the entries.
I feel bad because I must not do atleast 9 things that are that different that makes them important to keeping my house clean. I guess I should choose vacuming every other day as the most important thing I do to keeping my house clean.
keep the dirty dishes out of the sink
I try to do several things to make my house smell like MY house (I know EXACTLY what you’re son is talking about when he says that houses have specific smells). My first secret is to use the same scent everywhere… I usually only buy Bath & Body Works Sandalwood Vanilla scent in candles, plug-ins, & scented oil. It sounds boring, but if you have a unifying scent throughout your house, it’s really nice. I’ve had several people ask me “what that scent is in my house” (in a good way, I hope!). One guy actually called me from the plug-in aisle at B&BW to make sure he had the right one.
Also, when I feel like things are smelly (after cooking bacon or just during musty winter weather), I wash random things you wouldn’t normally think of (fabric shower curtain, window curtains, small rugs) and liberally use my go-to fabric softener in liquid form in the washing machine (I pretty much only use Downy April Fresh — in a Downy ball!). When you hang the slightly-damp curtains or a shower curtain, the fresh smell of the fabric softener radiates through the house. *Sigh* Success.
The most important thing is to have the fresh air, either open the window and have some air refreshers. Meanwhile, never keep dirty dishes overnight, vacuum at least once a day and mop/dust room regularly.

MY secrets are to always wash the rugs at least once a week. I also like to Febreze the sofa, chairs and drapes at least once a week. I keep candles in the bathrooms for decorative purposes but they also freshen those rooms up. And whenever possible, I open windows and let the fresh air in.

The most important thing I do to maintain a clean, fresh home is to keep it clean. Vacuum, wash the floors, keep the sink free of dishes, empty the trash, and open a few windows to let the stale air circulate out.
In the spirit of Jennyonthespot, I will be completely honest. I feel like I am loosing a very stinky battle with 4 kids, a grown man who will not be named, who likes to work out, but not so much the showering, 2 boy cats who have pee battles, and a sweet but very smelly dog. I vacuum and fabreze like crazy when someone is coming over and if some gets on the dog, thats not so bad. Although to be honest, the label does warn against this, so I don’t do it “on purpose”. I really need to win this.
I just found your site and it looks great! That first picture made me laugh. And I love Febreze! My roommates like to leave things lying around and it drives me bonkers. There always seems to be some smell lingering . . .
Those first two pictures are something…..
I live where it is warm a lot of the year so I open my windows whenever possible. I love having the fresh air inside.
Having 7 indoor cats means having to keep the litter boxes clean. I also use a high quality litter and keep plug in’s in the litter box room. Thats how I keep the house fresh smelling.

“What is the most important thing I do to maintain a clean, fresh home?” I think what’s most important is that I try to make sure no one leaves wet towels or other linens lying around, the trash is taken out regularly, and the dishes are clean. (I know, you’d think those are obvious things… but sometimes the most obvious are the ones most likely to be forgotten or neglected.)

I’m all about the one drop odor eliminator from the hardware store. It really does the trick for trash cans and diaper pails!
i make sure smelly laundry gets washed first! The toilet gets sprayed often with bleach (I have 3 men-one big 2 little…) the bath rugs also get washed weekly. Those are the main smelly things!
The most important thing I do to maintain a clean, fresh home is to run the dishwasher as soon as it’s filled up. My dishwasher gets really stinky and demands to be cleaned!
It would be nice if they made a scent that made others think you actually cleaned your bathroom. That’s the best scent. It would be grand if said company could make a scent that would drown out dog smell, but not freak out my husband’s SUPER sentive sniffer!
I try to keep things clean as I go, so that it never really piles up. Things like go through every day and pick up anything that’s out of place, wipe down countertops everytime after I make a meal, put dishes away before leaving the kitchen, etc.

I clean surfaces with clorox wipes & swiffer the floors!
I wish I could pretend that I have a clean fresh house. The best I can do right now is to keep the kitchen sink empty.
I keep the kitchen counters and floors relatively clean and keep the garbage can lid on. Of course, usig air-freshener helps too!
I keep the windows open when its nice out and I vacuum regularily.
I like to sprinkle plain baking soda before vacuuming. It gets rid of odors without bothering everyone’s allergies — like some of the scented vacuum powders can.
Thanks!

I like to open up my windows and get fresh air into the house. I also like to clean with bleach for that fresh, clean smell. Room sprays will work in a pinch for guests coming over.
Clorox Wipes! My children all know how to ’swipe’ with these wipes and quickly freshen a space. We also actually use Febreeze and one afternoon chore is to do a 3 second spray in each room. It all helps.
Having quadruplets that are still in diapers (ugggh!) — It is a MUST that the dirty diapers go outside IMMEDIATELY!!! lol!

I think that the most important thing I do to keep my home clean is use a ton of bleach wipes – seriously, on everything! Helps keep the place pretty clean and germ-free…
most important thing for me is opening the windows, even is just for a few minutes every day.

We open the windows every day, and I have scented diffusers in nearly ever room to keep our space smelling fresh and clean! I also try to use “green” products to avoid harsh-smelling odors when we clean.
To help keep our home fresh, we open the windows to let some fresh air in.
Even in the winter for a short time.

a shiny sink and a clear living room floor seems to make the “house” feel cleaner. fresh and clean smelling? it’s all a matter of keeping the garbage can controlled — and the cat box empty!
my floors are most important to me too keep my home clean. I have 3 kids and a dog. need i say more? ajsahm@gmail.com
I vacuum three times a week and use fragrant candles and sprays.
tamben7996(at)aol(dot)com
constantly dusting and wiping up dog hair
Cleaning – not so much. I AM a candle fanatic, however! The issue there is that my husband is worried I will one day burn down the house by forgetting how many candles I lit and where. I love the idea of NOTICEables as I’m pretty sure they won’t burn down the house.
I open the windows to let fresh air circulate.
We have a furry dog, and snow. That makes for a smelly house! I try to keep her clean and dry her off as soon as possible. We keep the windows open if we can and use Febreze on the couch cushions.
We have a downstairs shoe closet full of our exercise and sports shoes. Need I say more? I spray Febreze on the shoes every day and it really neutralizes the fruits of our labor–thank heaven!
I try to sweep and vacuum regularly!

I am constantly drying the cast iron skillet on the stove top and ending up with a scorched smell. I use a salt crystal candle to get rid of the odor, but to make the kitchen smell nice, I spritz a little citrus spray. I use Febreeze on the carpet around the guinea pig cage to keep that room nose friendly.
Keeping a clean home is so important to me,it is my way of showing love to my family. A scent of Febreze is something the whole family can enjoy,it can bring back memories of a happy time. Keeping surfaces clean by mopping, vacuum and wiping down keeps germs at bay and keeps my family happy and healthy. I love to burn candles and spray Febreze, leaving a great scent in my home.
Thanks
I keep my house fresh and clean by making sure my husband is in the mood for cleaning
He does all the cleaning up around the house. I just pick up once in a while. Lucky me, huh?
I blogged here: http://amoores.com/2009/10/12/8-ways-to-win-a-febreeze-gift-basket-100-gift-card/
Thank you for the entertaining review… The main thing I do to keep my house fresh is keep the floors spotless by vacumming & mopping regularly…After mopping the windows are opened to speed the dry time & I love the smell of Mr.Clean w/Fabreze.
Seriously, my house doesn’t always smell so fresh…that’s why I’m hoping to win that basket full of fabulous Febreeze goodies! We have a really small house which usually smells like whatever I’m cooking (sometimes that’s good, sometimes not so much!). Besides burning candles around the house, my favorite way to keep it smelling fresh and clean is to open all the windows for some fresh air.
Opening the windows regularly to let in fresh air, as well as making sure trash and laundry are regularly taken care of, are the main things I do.
Swiffering my hardwood floors every day is a must! Especially with 2 dogs…
I scoop the litter box every day and attempt to keep the bathrooms clean at all times as well. Sometimes feels like a losing battle with 3 kids, a cat, and a dog. I would LOVE to win this gift basket and gift card!!!
I wash the sheets and bedding every week. I also vacuum and mop often. With two big dogs and an active family the floors need to be clean.
Funny pictures!
I use a hepa pet hair specific vacuum cleaner combined with febreeze spray to deal with pet odor, it doesn’t help with the litter smell but everything else in my house smells great!
The most important thing that I do to maintain a clean, fresh home is that To open my windows in the morning and air out my house and then spray air freshner throughout.

Trying to keep a house clean with three boys AND a husband can be hard so I try to take out the trash daily, keep the floor swept and the dirty, stinky dishes clean!
I really want to try these febreeze things out!
I declutter and purge often, and try my hardest to keep the junk out of the house. We also try our hardest to not wear shoes in the house.
xoxo steph
For that fresh clean feeling, I make a giant batch of Nestle cookies – the kind from a tube. Just like that, the smell of my house suddenly appeals to everyone.
By virtue of answering this question does it necessitate that I maintain a clean, fresh home? I have three kids, two cats and no servants. Is this really possible? As soon as I clean one space a child or cat uncleans another. Once I fill my dishwasher – another meal is in progress and dishes pile in the sink. I guess the best thing I do if I want maintenance is to clean and flee. Get out of the house with the kids. Then the house stays clean until we come back. Do I win?
I definitely vacuum the couch and spray Febreeze Allergen reducer to help keep the cat hair at bay!
I clean on a regular basis. By clean I mean more than just a pickup. I deep clean. I also keep the trash emptied. With a baby and toddler in the house it’s imperative that the trash get taken out daily. I also refuse to allow laundry to build up. I do, on average 2 loads every day. I also keep plug ins in the higher outlets so the boys can’t reach and/or I burn nice light smelling candles.
I try to vacuum regularly to have a “clean” home.
I use the battery-operated air fresheners U hang on the wall that sprays every 30 min., they R awesome. I also use citrus scented cleaners, and air fresheners, the citrus scent seems 2 last longer. Around the holidays I seem 2 use the apple cinnamon scents.
pkbailey@charter.net
I used to use candles, now with young kids I use rain fresh clearers.
Jen? I like the way you roll GF. And Linda, I’m sure you’re a lovely person IRL but wow I don’t think I can have you over anytime soon, lol.
I run the kitchen fan to keep the cooking smells out…. but febreeze room spray is my friend…. a little spray here, a little spray there…. its in every bathroom, in every bedroom (because we all know what stinky boys and hubbies smell like- and what their dirty clothes are like too)… but the spray stuff gets used a lot in our house.
febreze me.
I vacuum the living room often (almost daily) to keep the stale smell out of the house. We have a split level, and I have a scented candle in the kitchen, and the scent always travels upstairs into the bedroom areas – so I get a 2-for-1 effect when I burn it.
The most important thing I do is keep up on chores. If I remember to take out the kitchen garbage every night, remember to clean the cat box, and keep up on the vacuuming, everything smells good. If I slack off I start having problems.

Baking cookies makes the house smell great; the only downside is then, well, I’d be stuck in the house because my butt would be too big to get through the doorway if I did this often.
On warmish days, I throw open the windows and doors and let the fresh air blow in – and hopefully blow the stale air out.
I shy away from candles because, well, two rambuncious preschoolers and open flames just has disaster written all over it.
Sheila’s trick is used a lot in our house too, baking soda sprinkled on the carpet and then vacuumed up after a few minutes. I also clean with vinegar and it always leaves the house smelling good (the vinegary smell goes away quickly).
1) Search out smelly culprits… typically the garbage cans. Empty often. 2) Keep kitchen cleaned up (dirty dishes sitting overnight = smelliness. Don’t do it!). 3) Bake something awesome, any kind of bread, cookies, or a dinner with lots of spices, etc. 4) Oh yeah, clean. Forgot that one.
Baking bread…mmm! Windows open. Don’t let dishes sit in the kitchen. Vacuuming. Spraying perfume on lightbulbs (when they’re not on. Scented candles. Febreeze furniture. When the house is “clean” (dusted, vacuumed, etc.) the house always smells better.

How funny, my kids come home for a visit and always say, “it smells like home”. I hope that is a good thing. I like to open all of the windows and let the fresh air in. I also use Febreeze on the soft furnishings. Vacuuming and dusting and all of the rest of the routine chores are also done of course.
I try to always keep up with the laundry…nothing like sweaty gym clothes and a slightly damp bath towel to really stink up the place!
To keep my house smelling good, I usualy use plugins as well. I haven’t tried the Febreeze Noticeables yet though!
Your post is hilarious, as always.
We leave our sliding glass door open, and sometime our condo’s front door open to create a crossbreeze. I also love to bake cookies — the store-bought dough — for a delicious smell.
Vacuum often. A stinky rug smells up the entire house.
i think the best thing would be to get rid of the dog (!) but we can’t do THAT! so mainly it’s window opening and laundry of everything washable….
For me it is essential that the bathroom is clean and well maintained. If the bathroom is nasty, then I can’t handle the rest of the house.
What an excellent blog, I’ve added your feed to my RSS reader.
